What is a CD-SACD Players and Transports?

A CD player is an electronic device that plays audio CDs. The type of DAC that these players incorporate and their range will determine the quality of the final sound.

What is a streamer?

A streamer or network audio player is a device capable of playing music digitally.

There are different ways to stream (send audio content to a player):

Wirelessly: This is the most common way to send content. It consists of sending music through our smartphone via bluetooth to a sound system. This method is the most comfortable but it is not the one that will offer us the best sound quality, since the audio signal is compressed to be able to send it in real time and without cuts. Although Bluetooth technology has advanced and there are things like aptX, it's still an unsuitable form of audio transmission if you're looking for the highest possible quality.

Through a local network: Another way to send streaming content is from a physical device that we have at home with digital content, which can be nearby or in another room. This device is usually either a computer with folders with all your music shared (for example with iTunes) or a NAS or network hard drive.

The advantage of this system is that you can store files in high-resolution formats that can exceed the quality of the CD. The disadvantage is that you must be responsible for keeping your entire collection organized or use software to help us with this task.

Through cloud services: This method is the most recent and popular among the youngest. They are internet music services (Spotify, Tidal, Qobuz, Amazon Music, Apple Music, Internet Radio…). To use them you have to be subscribed, paying a monthly fee but they will offer us a wide selection of high quality music.

When using a streamer that is compatible with your favorite cloud music service, when you access that service's app with your mobile device, and choose the songs you want to play, it is not the mobile or tablet that sends the music to the streamer automatically. wireless, as happens with bluetooth, but it is the smartphone that tells the streamer: play this song. The streaming player begins to download and play the song, with which your mobile becomes a kind of "remote control".

Guide to Buying Streamers

When choosing a good streamer, one of the aspects to take into account is the App offered by the manufacturer to control and access the musical content. There are High End streamers that include Apps that are not very fluid and that offer a user experience that leaves much to be desired.

In the market there are streamers with different qualities, functionalities and connectivity.

For beginner users, the ideal is to choose a simple streamer with analog output and compatibility with the Internet music service you have contracted.

If you want to listen to music with CD quality or higher, you will either need to play it from a local device on the network or use a service with music in high-resolution formats, such as Tidal or Qobuz.

If your audio equipment is high-end and you need a streamer to accompany you, you will need a high-end streamer. These streamers use high-quality internal DACs and power supplies.

On the other hand, there are HIFi equipment that already incorporate streaming functionality, such as amplifiers that, in addition to their usual inputs, also include an ethernet and/or Wi-Fi connection and have a built-in streamer.

Frequent questions

Streamer or CD player?

What is the best format to listen to music with the best possible quality? Unfortunately, there is no definitive answer to determine which is the best format. The choice of one format or another will also be related to concepts such as comfort and the user experience of the devices that we are going to use to listen to them.

In terms of final sound quality, streaming music is generally significantly worse than physical formats. The sampling rate and the compression that is done so that the audio can be transmitted over the network reduce the sound quality of the tracks. In any case, every day there are better music streaming services that offer high-resolution audio.
