What headphones to buy? Types and models

Before you buy the headphones that best suit you, you should know that there are different types of headphones.

Headphones according to their shape: Headband headphones and In-Ear Headphones

Headband headphones are those that are placed on the head.

Among the headband headphones are, according to their construction: Open headphones, the cups are open and let sound in and out, (most flagship headphones are of this type), and closed headphones in which neither enters nor the sound comes out.

According to their size they are: Circumaural headphones, also known as over-ear headphones, in which the pad completely surrounds the ear. And on-ear headphones with smaller-diameter ear cushions that sit on your ear but don't completely cover your ear.

In-Ear headphones are those that are placed directly inside the ear.

In recent years, this type of headset has been used mostly with smartphones and portable audio devices.

Headphones depending on your connection: Wired or wireless headphones

Wired headphones may have a SE stereo cable or a balanced cable for DACs and audio players that include this output.

Wireless headphones connect wirelessly via bluetooth or radio frequency.

Headphones according to use:

On the market there are also headphones with very specific characteristics, such as sports headphones for sports, gaming headphones with mute, volume controls and other useful functions for gamers, headphones with active noise cancellation and headphones for DJs to use. very resistant professional.

As a summary and in relation to the world of hi-fi, the top-of-the-range headphones are usually open circumaural with balanced cable.

Advantages and disadvantages of each type of headset

Intraaural or In Ear Headphones

In-Ear headphones are those that are placed directly inside the auditory pavilion. This allows them to isolate external sound. The sound reaches the ear directly, and although the popularity of this type of headphones has boomed in recent years, they still do not allow experiencing the spatiality and naturalness of the sounds because the sound reaches the head directly.

On the contrary, IEM headphones (in ear multi-driver) do achieve a level of detail and wide instrumental separation. The high-end models include from 8 to 18 drivers per capsule, however a greater number of drivers does not guarantee a better sound. Hybrid 3-driver IEMs already have what it takes to sound great.

Advantage:

Good sound quality for its size and weight.

They are light and generally comfortable.

cheap.

Disadvantages:

For some people they are uncomfortable, the pads do not adapt to all ear shapes.

Supraaural or On Ear Headphones

On-ear headphones are those that sit on the ear. They are often designed for portable use, so manufacturers sacrifice sound quality for better comfort and smaller size.

Advantage:

They are more comfortable and lighter than over-ear headphones for portable use.

Closed supraaural headphones offer good isolation from external sound, and in relation to their size they are a good option.

Disadvantages:

Compared to over-ear headphones, they offer smaller scenes and much worse instrument separation.

Due to its small size, the drivers included in its capsules are smaller, the sound quality is worse.

They become uncomfortable in prolonged use.

Over-ear headphones

Circumaural headphones are those that cover the ear in its entirety and rest on the head. In general, they are headphones that offer a greater range and better sound quality, since they have larger capsules, which allows manufacturers to include better drivers.

The cushion in this type of headphones covers the entire ear, which makes the sound reach the ear with greater detail.

Advantage:

Increased comfort for prolonged use.

Very good sound quality.

They allow sound to reach the ear with greater detail and better nuances compared to on-ear headphones.

Disadvantages:

They are uncomfortable for portable use, since they are more cumbersome to transport and generally need a case to store them.

Open headphones

Open headphones are those with the open cup. Most include a grill that lets sound in and out. This means that they do not insulate from outside sound.

Its use in noisy places is not recommended. However, in quiet places, such as a listening room, its fidelity is higher, the sound of this type of headphones is much more natural.

Advantage:

The timbre is more natural, more realistic.

The scene is wider, the instruments feel more separated, as if we were listening to the sound live instead of having the perception that it is a sound that comes through speakers.

Sound more true to reality.

Disadvantages:

In noisy environments they are not recommended.

Closed headphones

Closed-back headphones have a closed cup and a thicker ear cushion than open-back headphones. This allows them to isolate ambient sound and prevent sound from escaping to the outside.

The greater or lesser degree of isolation depends on the final quality of the earphone.

Advantage:

They insulate outside sound so you won't be disturbed or bother anyone.

In relation to bass, closed headphones offer more nuances. The bass is stronger.

Disadvantages:

Some models, to improve insulation, can be annoying as they put more pressure on the head. Greater discomfort if you wear glasses.

In low-end headphones the sound can sound somewhat bottled up.

As a general rule, at the same driver and cup size, they have less scene than open headphones. Although there are models with a large cup that, without having the scene of the best open ones, achieve excellent results.

Semi-open headphones

Semi-open headphones , as the name suggests, are the middle ground between open headphones and closed headphones. In general, the internal structure of this type of headphones is more similar to that of closed headphones, since it uses openings only to let air out at the lowest frequencies.

They are more versatile headphones, which makes them a better option if you are ever going to use them in settings with some background noise.

Sound-wise, the sound from semi-open headphones is more like the sound you might experience with open-back headphones, except for the bass.

Advantage:

Combines the sound of an open headphone with the bass of a closed one.

Disadvantages:

It cannot match the quality of the best models of the other types.
