Frequent questions

How to configure a HIFI equipment correctly? Steps to follow

If instead of opting for an already established HIFI audio set you prefer to choose the components of your audio equipment one by one, we suggest the following:

We recommend that the first thing you do is define your budget to be able to distribute it properly in the team. The appropriate thing would be to dedicate 20% to the source, 30% to the amplifier and 40% to the loudspeakers, to which 10% of the total amount would have to be added for the different cables.

Following the proposal, the first team to choose would be the players. At this point you would have to decide if you prefer an analog source or a digital source .

If you decide on an analog source , you should look for a turntable that is free of vibrations and resonances, so that the pickup cartridge is not affected by external disturbances that can degrade the sound. For this, feet made of materials that absorb vibrations are also necessary. As for the tone arm, you must choose one designed and manufactured with high precision and that offers the possibility of adjusting the support force and anti-slip or anti-skating. Regarding cartridges, we recommend using a Moving Magnet (MM) cartridge for entry level equipment and a Moving Coil (MC) cartridge for higher level equipment.

If you decide on a digital source you can choose to buy a CD or SACD player or a streamer. If you opt for a player, what you have to look for is that the D/A conversion section is equipped with a state-of-the-art "chip" (24-bit/192 kHz technology). More important still is the quality of the analog circuitry (power supply and output circuitry). A good transport mechanic will save work for the player's bug fixing system, so the better the transport mechanic, the higher the player's final price will be.

There are some players on the market that include DAC functionality, including digital inputs in the most used formats, that is, coaxial, optical and USB to play external digital content.

If you opt for a streamer, you have to know when choosing the model that best suits your needs and/or possibilities. In technical aspects, the evaluation criteria when making a purchase decision are exactly the same as those of a CD or SACD player.

The most important thing is to make sure that the chosen model includes state-of-the-art circuits to guarantee a fast and quality connection to the Internet and to the different online music services.

Once we are clear about our signal source, we must manage/process it (Preamplifier / power stage) on the one hand and on the other give it strength so that it reaches its speakers (amplifier) correctly .

In higher level equipment, the preamplifier and the power amplifier are usually configured with two separate equipment and in a more basic equipment the two are integrated into one, which is known as an integrated amplifier.

When deciding on an integrated amplifier, we must base our choice on the source/sources that we have/want to have. Therefore, if we decide that the turntable is not our thing, we would choose an amplifier equipped with line inputs only. Nor will it hurt to have good wireless connectivity, read Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (better aptX HD if possible). And if we have a part of our music collection stored on a computer, we may also be interested in a good DAC functionality.

If we are interested in the vinyl record, we will have to look for an amplifier with a phono input and check that it supports the type of capsule (MM or MC) that we are willing to buy.

On the power stage , it is always better to go more than just enough power so as not to push our team to the limit. This only causes distortion problems and our speakers can be damaged. Of course, the size of our listening room must also be taken into account. As a starting point 40-50 watts continuous per channel into 8 ohms would be reasonable.

Finally, it would be necessary to choose the loudspeakers.  This is a world and there is nothing better than always listening to the boxes that we want to buy in the company of the amplifier that we have decided to buy or that we already have.

Cables and accessories are very important components. They are the final adjustment so that the whole team works perfectly. Regarding the cables, their importance in the final sound quality is more than demonstrated. The most important are the speaker cables, those for analog interconnection between components, digital interconnection and, of course, power.
