Audio-Technica AT33xMLB: High-Resolution MC Cartridge with MicroLine Stylus and Solid Boron Cantilever
The Audio-Technica AT33xMLB is the most advanced evolution of the historic AT33 series, into which the Japanese brand has poured decades of experience in designing high-performance moving-coil cartridges. This complete update introduces key improvements in materials, structure and tuning, delivering a warmer, fuller and more natural presentation without sacrificing the extreme precision that defines the AT33 line.
One of the most significant advances in the AT33xMLB is the use, for the first time in the series, of die-cast zinc in the cartridge base. This highly rigid and dense material effectively suppresses unwanted vibrations and audibly enhances expressiveness in the mid and low frequencies, giving music more body, depth and tonal realism.
Fitted with a nude MicroLine stylus and a solid, tapered boron cantilever, the AT33xMLB can follow the record groove with extraordinary accuracy. This combination recovers the subtlest details of the recording, offering extremely faithful tracing even in complex passages. Its high-resolution tracking is particularly impressive with orchestral works—each instrument is rendered with clarity and spatial coherence—and with records produced from the late 1970s onwards, which benefit most from advances in high-fidelity recording and pressing.
The newly developed suspension system, which uses piano wire as a key element, slightly reduces dynamic compliance compared with previous generations. This optimisation improves compatibility with a wide range of tonearms and contributes to a more solid, articulate reproduction, especially in the lower midrange, where the music gains density and presence without losing control.
The cartridge body is built from a composite structure of die-cast zinc, aluminium and high-rigidity polymer, carefully arranged to disperse resonances evenly. This architecture prevents any frequency band from dominating the rest, resulting in a balanced, natural and coherent sound across the entire audible spectrum.
Inside, the AT33xMLB employs a dual moving-coil design with independent PCOCC (Pure Copper Ohno Continuous Casting) coils for the left and right channels. This configuration ensures a pure, fluid signal transmission, with outstanding channel separation and a precise, stable stereo image. A powerful neodymium magnet and permendur yoke generate a strong, efficient magnetic field, further enhancing dynamic response and overall resolution.
Designed for high-end installations, the AT33xMLB features threaded mounting holes, greatly simplifying installation—especially on integrated tonearms—by eliminating the need for separate nuts. Like all cartridges in this series, it is built and individually tuned by hand in Japan, reflecting Audio-Technica’s commitment to precision craftsmanship and sonic excellence.
Note: The AT33xMLB stylus is not user-replaceable. Audio-Technica offers a paid MC cartridge exchange programme for proper service and maintenance.
