Rega AOS MC: Reference MC phono preamplifier with loading adjustment and fully analogue circuit
The Rega AOS MC is a dedicated phono preamplifier for moving-coil cartridges, developed from the British firm’s experience with its prestigious Aura MC stage. Designed to extract all the information contained in the groove with maximum purity, the AOS delivers exceptionally defined, quiet and lifelike playback, capable of bringing more texture, spaciousness and naturalness to any vinyl collection.
Housed in an elegant half-width chassis made entirely from aluminium, this phono stage has been conceived to work with a wide range of MC cartridges, including very low-output models, thanks to its high gain and loading adjustment options.
Designed for demanding MC cartridges
The AOS has been created specifically to provide an optimal interface between a moving-coil cartridge and a conventional line input. Its design allows precise adjustment of both resistive and capacitive loading, making ideal synergy with different cartridges and systems much easier to achieve.
In addition, it comes factory-configured for use with all Rega MC cartridges, so it can deliver its best performance from the very first moment while still offering excellent flexibility for fine adjustment.
Fully analogue design
The Rega AOS MC is a 100% analogue phono stage, with no digital control circuitry. Rega has removed any superfluous element that could degrade the signal, opting for a clean, purist architecture.
Its aluminium case effectively shields the internal circuitry from RFI interference and helps maintain a quiet electrical environment, something essential when dealing with signals as delicate as those produced by an MC cartridge.
Among its most interesting solutions is a self-adjusting servo control, responsible for compensating for variations caused by operating temperature or the surrounding environment, helping to maintain a more stable and consistent response.
Low-noise FET transistors
The input stage uses ultra-low-noise FET transistors connected in parallel and configured as a composite pair. This choice is deliberate: FETs allow no bias current to flow through the cartridge coil, preventing any alteration to its delicate magnetic geometry and thus preserving signal integrity from the source.
In addition, the circuit design avoids unnecessary coupling components between the cartridge output and the input stage, minimizing losses and better preserving musicality.
Two-stage Class A architecture
First stage
The first section of the circuit is a symmetrical and complementary Class A amplifier, based on ultra-low-noise Linear Systems FET transistors. This stage also controls the passive high-frequency section of the RIAA equalization, using carefully selected and matched components to optimize sonic performance.
Second stage
The second section is a symmetrical differential Class A amplifier with a common-base driver stage, also used as the active amplifier in the low-frequency section of the RIAA equalization. This solution helps achieve a response that is precise, stable and extremely musical.
Loading and gain adjustment
The AOS allows selection of input resistive loading between 70, 100, 150 and 400 ohms, as well as capacitive loading of 1000 pF or 4300 pF, making precise matching to different MC cartridges possible.
Input sensitivity can also be adjusted from the rear panel via a 6 dB gain change, allowing operation to be optimized for cartridges with different output levels.
Automatic standby function
To improve energy efficiency, the Rega AOS MC incorporates an automatic standby function that places the unit into standby when it detects no signal for a certain period. This function can be disabled באמצעות DIP switches located on the rear panel.
