Review Wharfedale Dovedale

At the 2022 Munich High End hi-fi audio trade fair and celebrating the 90th anniversary of the founding of the legendary British company Wharfedale, Peter Comeau presented the new three-way loudspeakers from the Heritage range, the Wharfedale Dovedale. If you are a hi-fi audio enthusiast looking for an unrivalled sound experience, the Wharfedale Dovedale loudspeakers are a must-have choice. Manufactured in the UK, the result is a rich, natural sound that is complemented by a spatial presentation that is unparalleled in a speaker system of this size.

Nowadays, there are many loudspeaker models on the market with a fantastic timbre, but they don't manage to fill the space between the cabinet and the cabinet with sound. These Wharfedale Dovedales, on the other hand, create a well-dimensioned soundstage and get the tone right, making for a very comfortable listening experience.

The original Dovedale was first produced in 1965, but this revamped version was inspired by the later Dovedale 3 model originally released in 1971. Joining the trend for modern classic speakers like the Linton, Wharfedale has managed to revive another classic speaker with modern technologies as part of its Heritage series.

The new Dovedales are a little taller, a little wider and much deeper in dimensions than the original Dovedale 3 models (and are also larger than the Wharfedale Linton) with new drivers and technology that make the most of that extra space.

Precisely shaped and positioned internal bracing has been added to the enclosure to ensure that cabinet resonances are kept under control, well below the level of the musical signal, thus preventing potential colouration from interfering with listening.

The 25 mm fabric dome tweeter has its own rear chamber, which is damped to absorb unwanted output from the rear of the unit and reduce resonances that affect high-frequency performance. The 13 cm midrange and 25 cm bass drivers are now made of Kevlar, and the midrange unit is further housed in its enclosure to ensure that the mid frequencies are not affected by vibrations from the larger bass driver.

Another detail reflecting the technical refinement of the Dovedale is the use of two printed circuit boards for the crossover, one for the mid/treble section and one for the bass section, despite the fact that bi-wiring is not envisaged.

Both units are further damped with acoustic foam and long pile fibre and, according to the British manufacturer, the bass reaches a depth of 25 Hz. The crossover components were also carefully chosen for "their revealing and transparent character", says Wharfedale, and were placed on PCBs in such a way that they "avoid electromagnetic interference".

This is, let there be no doubt about it, a new classic in hi-fi audio. These loudspeakers are also highly recommended for their price/performance ratio.
