Over a period of 14 years, almost to the day we first introduced our iconic R1 radio, have passed. Now, 14 years later, this winter, we are pleased to announce the launch of the fourth generation of this iconic radio. Like the original, the design of the R1 Mk4 is simple yet stunning, but we believe it now matches the expectations of today's discerning consumers even better.

This new R1 is ideal for the kitchen, perfect in the office and just lovely to wake up to in the bedroom. In addition, it features a high quality Bluetooth receiver that allows wireless transmission from your phone or computer to the R1. Most importantly, if you're a music lover, we're sure you'll find the R1 Mk4 a real revelation.

In this new edition, we have taken a more progressive approach to both design and performance. Using a precision moulding process, we have been able to gently shape the enclosure, giving it a refreshed and elegant look, as well as being the perfect surface for our new Light Cream and Espresso finishes. The cabinet is robust and acoustically inert thanks to the acoustic treatment, making it the optimal environment for our electronics and NS+ controller.

To add an extra touch of sophistication, we've incorporated a beautifully handcrafted slatted wooden grille, which brings a timeless and elegant feel to the overall design, while maintaining Ruark's distinctive essence.

In terms of sound, we've set the bar even higher compared to our previous editions of the R1. Thanks to our expertise in hi-fi loudspeakers, we have refined the enclosure design and drive unit so that they complement each other ideally. The latest NS+ neodymium driver used in the R3 and R5 models ensures a smooth and extended frequency response, delivering impressive bass performance in the tight enclosure of the R1 Mk4.

The system is driven by a powerful Class A/B linear amplifier that guarantees exceptional dynamics. And with adaptive equalisation, you'll enjoy exceptional sound at all volume levels.

Our crisp OLED display shows time, alarms and programme information clearly and automatically adjusts to ambient light conditions, making it the perfect companion for your bedroom. Radio reception is excellent and the Bluetooth receiver allows you to enjoy the R1's superb sound when streaming music from your smartphone or computer.

In addition, the R1 offers the versatility to configure FM settings to suit US and Japanese needs, and its multilingual user interface makes it truly international. In addition, thanks to its built-in real-time clock, the time and date are kept up to date even when the power is disconnected or when no transmission data is available.

These are just some of the highlights; others include a USB-C port for random playback and charging, a headphone output, a switchable line input and, of course, our distinctive RotoDial control system. For those who prefer remote operation, we offer a handy optional remote control.

Backpack II

With its battery status display and improved power management, the R1 Mk4 offers even more exceptional performance and extended battery life thanks to our optional Backpack II. This means you can enjoy the R1's rich sound for longer in places where there's no mains access.

The Backpack II fits perfectly to the R1 and, once installed, can remain in place permanently, as it automatically recharges each time it is connected to the mains. A full charge will provide up to twelve hours of playback, depending on volume.

In addition, the Backpack II is compatible with our Ruark MR1 mk2 Bluetooth speaker system.
