Last November, Wharfedale introduced the Super Linton, a revamped and improved version of its iconic Linton loudspeakers. This new model joins the Heritage Series, a line of classic stereo speakers inspired by the designs of the 1960s and 1970s, which have been redesigned to meet the demands of today's audiophiles. Conceived as a tribute to their legacy, this range recaptures the essence of those times with contemporary technology.
Originally launched in the 1960s, the Linton model established itself as one of the best-selling loudspeakers in Britain. In 2019, the manufacturer decided to reissue it, keeping its retro spirit, but renewing its technology to meet today's standards, and it was a big seller. Now, the Super Linton arrives to continue this evolution, building on the success of the 2019 edition and taking its performance to a new level.
The Wharfedale Linton and Wharfedale Super Linton speakers, while sharing similar aesthetics and design, have notable differences in their construction, components and sonic performance.
Wharfedale SUPER LINTON: Review and differences to the original Linton
Both models have similarities in their design approach, but when delving deeper into their technical specifications, the differences between the two models are remarkable, demonstrating Wharfedale's effort to perfect the acoustic performance in the Super Linton version.
.
.
Cabinet dimensions and construction
The Wharfedale Super Linton features a slightly larger size than the original Linton, with an additional 4 cm in height, resulting in a cabinet with a higher internal volume. This increased internal capacity allows for better low-frequency performance, providing greater bass depth. In addition, while the Linton uses standard MDF with internal bracing, the Super Linton significantly improves cabinet construction through a double-layer design, using a latex adhesive that acts as a shock absorber. This drastically reduces panel resonances, improving the clarity and purity of sound.
Drivers and transducers
In terms of drivers, both models share certain similarities, but the Super Linton introduces significant improvements. Both use a woofer with a 200mm Kevlar cone for the low frequencies, but the Super Linton features a more powerful magnet motor system that allows it to deliver more controlled and accurate bass, reaching an extension of up to 32 Hz, while the original Linton goes down to 40 Hz.
In the midrange, both models employ a 135 mm driver with a Kevlar cone, but in the Super Linton, this is housed in a dedicated chamber with internal damping of long pile fibres. This design optimises mid-frequency reproduction, achieving greater naturalness and detail by avoiding internal acoustic interference.
The tweeter also receives a major upgrade in the Super Linton. While both models feature a 25mm fabric dome, improvements such as an optimised waveguide and a damped rear chamber have been added to the Super Linton, reducing distortion and smoothing sound dispersion for more accurate and balanced highs.
Crossover (filter) and internal components
The crossover design also undergoes a significant evolution. Whereas the original Linton uses a single board to manage frequencies, the Super Linton splits the circuit into two separate boards. This reduces electromagnetic interference between components and ensures that each driver receives a cleaner, more accurate signal. In addition, the crossover frequency has been adjusted on the Super Linton (570 Hz and 2.2 kHz, versus 630 Hz and 2.4 kHz on the Linton), allowing for a smoother transition between controllers.

Acoustic performance
In terms of sensitivity, the Super Linton shows a slight improvement at 91 dB, compared to 90 dB for the original Linton. This means that it requires less power to reach the same volume level, making it more efficient. In addition, the Super Linton is capable of handling up to 300W of power, compared to the Linton's 200W, making it an ideal choice for high-powered setups.
In terms of sound, the Super Linton offers deeper, more controlled bass, greater mid-frequency clarity thanks to the dedicated midrange driver chamber, and more refined, smoother highs. While the original Linton has a warm, dynamic profile that remains engaging, the Super Linton delivers a more precise and immersive listening experience, better meeting the standards of the most discerning audiophile.
