QUALITON. High fidelity electronic devices with high standards

Published : 2022-03-23 - Categories : Categories , Last hi-fi news

With more than 40 years of experience in the manufacture of equipment under various names, Qualiton Audio has landed in the Hi-End sector with the clear idea of staying and developing tube products with a magnificent price-quality ratio.

Qualiton is the commercial firm of Audio Hungary that began in 1940 under different names until it became the Budapest Electroacoustic Factory (BEAG) that assembled the entire sound system for the Moscow Olympic Games in 1980 becoming the center of attention for the world of hi-fi audio. BEAG was later divided into several companies, including Univox, which was acquired by Audio Hungary in the 1990s.

In 2015 the brand launched its first Qualiton APX 200  amplifier and since then it has expanded its product catalog which has diversified in the national and international market.

Right now their aim is to design, develop and produce hi-fi electronic devices with high quality standards.

In the Qualiton catalog you can find:

Integrated amplifiers

Power Stages

Preamp

Phono Preamplifiers

Qualiton A20i

Stereo, integrated class A amplifier with push-pull circuitry. The nominal output power of the device is 20 W maximum per channel. The outputs on the rear panel can be connected to speakers with a nominal impedance of 8. The design of the output transformers of the power amplifier allows the amplifier to be connected also with speakers with a nominal impedance of 4. This leads to a slight deviation from the indicated parameters. in the technical data sheet.

On the front panel, the volume control potentiometer and the input selector are connected to the same axis. Indicators that report the actual status of the amplifier are also located on the front panel. It can be monitored if the device is ready to work (if so, the LED next to the volume control changes from red to white light). The user is also informed about the actual position of the input selection unit. The amp is made from 1.5mm thick solid polished stainless steel sheet.

Qualiton A50i

Integrated class A tube amplifier with an output power of 2 x 50 W. The device can be connected to loudspeakers with a nominal impedance of 4 Ω and 8 Ω. Power outputs, based on KT 120 type output pentodes, were matched to the aforementioned rated loads via in-house manufactured precision wound output transformers. The bias control circuit also plays an important role in the operation of the output power. This circuit monitors the quiescent current of the output tubes and adjusts it to a preset value. Therefore, all four output tubes are aligned so that they operate perfectly the same.

Of the three unbalanced and one balanced inputs, the desired one can be chosen with the front panel volume control and input selector. The balanced input features a mini XLR connector. In this case too, the entire volume control and input selector unit is in total harmony with the device's polished and shiny casing, which combines functionality and aesthetics to perfection.

The minimalist remote control was designed with this philosophy: unique and aesthetic exterior design was always taken into account and ease of use was improved. Finally, a couple of words on the set of tubes used: the audio signal that arrives at the selected input of the device is received by Tungsram ECC83 type tubes. The driving voltage, as well as its matching, are produced by E88CC / 6922s. On the power output, the aforementioned KT 120 output pentodes are in action, strictly Class-A.

Qualiton Phono

A premium grade vacuum tube phono stage with extremely low noise and distortion, made to complement the Qualiton series. At its input, the device can receive low-level signals from moving magnetic cartridges. Optionally with additional charge, with the help of the interchangeable card on the rear panel, the circuit can be reconfigured, in this way, the device will be able to process signals coming from moving coil cartridges. In the signal transmission circuit, signal processing is performed by Tungsram ECC83 as well as double Tesla E88CC triodes. Standard RIAA correction is performed by a classical passive network between the amplification stages. In this case, we do not use a negative feedback. The nominal input sensitivity of the device is 5 mV. In response to an input signal with an effective value like this, an effective output signal value of nominal 500 mV can be measured at the output ports.

To achieve the lowest possible noise level, we have designed an external stabilized power supply for the device with high-capacity filter capacitors and high-quality connectors. In this regard, we were also not willing to settle for any compromises, considering that this construction is much more advantageous than a usual configuration. In the case of the latter, the stray magnetic field from the power supply transformer has a significantly adverse effect on the signal-to-noise ratio of the signal transmission circuit, directly impairing the music experience.

Qualiton APR 204

The launch of the Qualiton APX 200 vacuum tube stereo power amplifier led to the demand to develop a completely classic vacuum tube preamplifier. The Qualiton APR 204 vacuum tube preamplifier is intended to meet this demand by not wanting to appear more than it is: in fact, it is an indispensable element of the sound chain that was developed on the basis of clear guiding principles and is capable to evoke the classics of tube electronics.

At the same time, three audio sources with line level output signals, as well as one signal source with MM phono output signal level, can be connected to the rear panel RCA connectors. With the help of the front panel audio source selector switch, the user can determine, of these four audio sources, which of the relay-switched, volume-controlled signals should be delivered to the output RCA connectors.

If the input selector unit is set to 'P', i.e. in the PHONO position, the signal to be processed enters the grid of the first voltage amplifier vacuum tube through RCA connectors marked PHONO, thus through of the shortest possible signal paths. From here, in the classic way mentioned above, the signal component is incorporated into the network of the second voltage amplifier stage through a passive correction network between stages according to the RIAA standard, made exclusively with passive elements. We use double triodes ECC83 / 12AX7 in both the first and second stages of voltage amplification. By means of an appropriate tuning circuit and volume control potentiometer, the output of the PHONO stage is connected to the LINE stage, which consists of dual E88CC/6922 triodes.

Qualiton APX 200

As the successor to the previous BEAG APX 100 amplifier, we have created the Qualiton APX 200 vacuum tube stereo power amplifier that can drive low impedance speakers. Unlike the previous model, in the case of the Qualiton APX 200 we do not insist on the monobloc design. Instead, we consider it more favorable if we use a more compact and cheaper stereo version compared to the previous design.

The power of the device was set to 2 x 100 W, so it is capable of dynamically driving even the most insensitive speakers. The frequency response of the power amplifier is completely linear over the audio frequency range, at 100 W rated output power, measured using a sine waveform. The low-frequency breakpoint of the frequency response is 15 Hz, the upper cutoff frequency is 100 kHz (-3 dB points). Across the entire audio frequency range, total harmonic distortion is less than 1% and the device's signal-to-noise ratio is typically greater than 101 dB. During the development of this product, the listed technical parameters were achieved due to carefully designed circuit arrangements, a selected set of vacuum tubes, and an ex-process fabricated output transformer.

The protection of the vacuum tube assembly is handled with special care. Valve life can be drastically reduced by uncontrolled current transients at power-up. Similarly, the sudden high voltage change of the anode in non-preheated vacuum tubes can have an adverse effect on its life. To eliminate these effects, the device is equipped with a slow start circuit and an anode voltage delay circuit.
