HDMI or High-Definition Multimedia Interface is a standard introduced in 2002 for the transmission of uncompressed encrypted digital audio and video. The use of an HDMI cable allows the transmission of a digital signal, higher resolution video signal, multi-channel sound on a single cable and the inclusion of ancillary data.
The HDMI cable has 19 pins of which 12 are for the TMDS channel which is responsible for carrying the audio, video and auxiliary data, one for the CEC channel which is used for remote control functions and the others distributed in various other functions such as automatic detection when connecting the cable, 5v voltage, etc..
The HDMI cable is used to unify video and audio playback standards, so we can connect high-definition video player devices adapted to current standards with high-definition video and audio output devices. With an HDMI cable we can connect our Blu-Ray player to a Home Cinema device that will distribute the image in the best possible way and without loss of quality to the person in charge of emitting the image, for example, a TV or a video projector, and the audio will come out through the different channels that we have connected to the Home Cinema, normally distributed in 2.1, 5.1 or 7.1.
We can also use HDMI to connect our laptop to a TV or projector via the HDMI cable.
