Audio Research Reference 210: Power, Precision, and Compact Design

Following the success of the Reference 610T and the discontinuation of the VTM200 and REF300MKII, Audio Research introduces the Reference 210—a more compact and accessible monoblock amplifier within its prestigious Reference series. This model aims to bring high-fidelity sound to a broader audience without compromising sonic quality or technical performance.

Design and Build

The Reference 210 features a sleek, understated design with a closed chassis similar in size to the VT100 and VTM200. It includes a vacuum fluorescent display, like those found in the REF3 and REF610T, which allows key functions to be controlled via remote: adjustable illumination, tube bias measurement, line voltage, scalable output power, and usage hours.

Internally, it employs a new layout with horizontally mounted circuit boards, centrally placed transformers, and an orderly distribution of electronics. A low-noise Papst fan is included to ensure optimal operating temperature.

Performance and Technology

Delivering 210 watts per channel of continuous power, the Reference 210 utilizes a fully balanced circuit with partial cathode coupling. It features three pairs of 6550C output tubes and two additional 6550Cs as drivers. The input stage combines direct-coupled JFETs with 6N1P vacuum tubes.

One of its standout features is the enormous energy storage in its power supply—787 joules—far surpassing earlier models like the REF300MKII. The unit incorporates both solid-state and tube regulation, along with a wide-bandwidth output transformer that enables a frequency response of 0.5 Hz to 240 kHz (-3 dB).

Technical Specifications

Sound Quality

The Reference 210 delivers exceptionally high-definition sound, characterized by deep, dynamic, and clear performance. Its soundstage is immersive and detailed, providing a lifelike and emotionally powerful listening experience. Its bass response and articulation make it a top-tier choice even among the most demanding audiophiles.
