ICON AUDIO MB 805. Monophonic Tube Power Amplifier | 1 x 50W
Designed in Leicester by David Shaw, founder of Icon Audio, the 805 tube is an exceptional component capable of delivering a warm and sublime sound. However, to reach its full potential, it requires an optimal driver circuit and a high-quality power supply. Drawing on our extensive experience, we developed the MB805 power amplifier, designed to maximize the performance of this tube.
A close relative of the RCA 845, the 805 tube offers higher output power but also demands a highly precise driver circuit. To ensure outstanding performance, we have incorporated four 6SN7 driver tubes and one 2A3 tube into the design.
For many sound enthusiasts, only a large triode tube like the 805 can deliver a warm and immersive tone, with an unparalleled sense of space and realism. However, most power amplifiers using this tube tend to have low power output. The MB805 was engineered to deliver 50 watts, providing enough power to faithfully reproduce both grand orchestral works and modern music.
For the most demanding audiophiles, a Single-Ended power amplifier (featuring a single output tube) is the key to achieving musical purity, though this ideal is not always easy to attain. The 805 tube has great potential to drive conventional speakers smoothly, yet it is complex to handle. To optimize its dynamics and sonic character, we use an additional power stage with a 2A3 triode, driven by four 6SL7 tubes.
Not only does the 805 triode tube stand out for its exceptional sound, but when properly utilized, it provides sufficient power for most speakers, except for the least efficient ones. In the development of this design, we have spared no expense in technology and components: it features an oversized power supply and an output transformer with our exclusive tertiary winding. Additionally, a sophisticated low-pass filter smooths the power delivery, ensuring clean and refined sound reproduction.
The result is one of the most extraordinary power amplifiers we have ever created, combining the power, speed, and dynamics of a push-pull configuration with the delicacy and precision characteristic of a Single-Ended design.
For some audiophiles, the Single-Ended Triode (SET) design represents the purest form of musical reproduction, free from mechanical or artificial distortions, offering a rich and natural sonic texture. While this type of design is generally not as dynamic as modern push-pull amplifiers, the MB805SE provides enough power to meet most listening needs.
