Turntable foundations have always been a big discussion of how they influence sound. The interaction between the record and the surface can be tracked very easily by the super sensitivity of a good pickup capsule.
Common felt mats give a soft contact between the vinyl and the plate but have the disadvantage of static electricity. That means felt backings often collect a lot of dust that can be transferred to vinyl. Also the damping capacity is very limited, which can be a problem with metal chainrings. The thick rubber bands overmold the record and have an isolating effect that leaves static energy on the vinyl with noise clicks as a result.
Leather and cork are two different and very interesting options to improve sound quality. Resonances are more effectively damped by keeping dust away and with enough contact to prevent static energy.
A very economical way to improve sound and have less noise from static and dust. You can hear a big difference!
