MC Series. Step-Up Transformers for Moving Coil Cartridges
The MC Series step-up transformers are meticulously designed to amplify the ultra-low-level signal generated by Moving Coil (MC) cartridges, raising it to the appropriate level for connection with a Moving Magnet (MM) phono preamplifier.
These passive transformers offer an exceptionally musical, quiet, and color-free solution, preserving signal integrity from the very first stage of amplification.
Available Models & Gain Levels
MC5: 1:5 ratio – Gain: 14 dB
MC10: 1:10 ratio – Gain: 20 dB
MC16: 1:16 ratio – Gain: 24 dB
MC20: 1:20 ratio – Gain: 26 dB
Equivalent Input Impedance (with standard 47 kΩ MM load):
MC5 → 2,000 Ω
MC10 → 500 Ω
MC16 → 200 Ω
MC20 → 140 Ω
For custom loading, parallel RCA connectors are provided at the input, allowing the use of additional loading resistors if desired.
Construction & Technical Design
Each MC transformer is built around a single C-core with a proprietary amorphous core material and dual windings. Special winding techniques are employed to minimize inter-winding capacitance and maintain a wide, natural frequency response.
Electromagnetic shielding via mu-metal enclosure
Housed in a 10 mm thick nickel-plated soft iron case
Exceptional resistance to external magnetic fields for ultra-quiet performance
Compatibility with MC Cartridges
The MC transformers were developed alongside the VPS-100 phono stage, but are fully compatible with most MC cartridges on the market, provided the recommended ranges are observed for optimal performance:
MC5: For cartridges outputting 0.8 – 1.2 mV
MC10: For cartridges outputting 0.4 – 0.6 mV
MC16: For cartridges outputting 0.3 – 0.4 mV
MC20: For cartridges outputting 0.2 – 0.3 mV
