Wharfedale Series EVO 5: High-end sound at affordable prices

After a period of silence in the affordable Hi-Fi segment, Wharfedale returns with the new EVO 5 Series, the direct successor to the acclaimed EVO 4 range. This latest line retains the EVO philosophy of versatility for both Hi-Fi and home cinema, while introducing key upgrades in components, crossover design, and acoustic architecture, all without a steep price increase.

The EVO 5 range consists of five models: two bookshelf speakers (EVO 5.1 and EVO 5.2), two floorstanders (EVO 5.3 and EVO 5.4), and a dedicated centre speaker (EVO 5.C). While the exterior styling maintains the familiar silhouette of its predecessor, the internals have been entirely reengineered: increased cabinet volume, new driver units, redesigned crossovers, and upgraded materials throughout.

Notable improvements include a new version of the AMT tweeter, upgraded 50 mm textile dome midrange drivers, and low-distortion woofer motors inherited from the premium Elysian range. These are paired with Kevlar cones and Wharfedale’s ResoSeal mounting system, delivering more natural mids and expressive vocal clarity.

The crossover network has also undergone a complete overhaul, now featuring premium-grade components and independent PCBs to reduce interference and improve phase coherence and driver integration.

According to Peter Comeau, Wharfedale’s Director of Acoustic Design, the EVO 5 Series brings significant improvements in both sound and appearance over the EVO 4, while continuing to deliver outstanding value for money.

Comparison between Wharfedale EVO5 Series vs. EVO4 Series

Larger tweeter (35x70 vs. 30x60mm), improved dispersion and clarity.

SilentWeave and ResoFrame added to all drivers: reduced resonances.

Three-way SLPP port vs. previous two-way venting: less sensitive to placement.

More cabinet volume for greater bass impact and a wider soundstage.

Refreshed design and new finishes (including Lunar Grey).

The Wharfedale EVO5 Series represents a firm step forward: evolution, not revolution. It improves on what worked, adds technologies designed for the professional Elysian, and packages it into an accessible product for the discerning enthusiast.
