AUDIO RESEARCH Reference 330M Mono Amplifier
Originally, the Reference 320M amplifier was intended to be a larger, more powerful version of the Reference 160M, but it turned out to be a more sophisticated combination of designs integrated into other Reference amplifiers. What was presented in 2022 was a concept, not a final product. The 330M, on the other hand, is a completely different beast, capable of producing 330 watts per channel.
The Reference 330M is unique and mixes innovative ideas, new designs and updated components with the best concepts from other Reference series amplifiers. All gain is achieved through vacuum tubes, using transistors only for impedance damping.
The new interface borrows its architecture from the 610T, employing an ECC83 tube for voltage gain. The output of the ECC83 is protected by special bipolar transistors that mimic tube qualities. These bipolar buffers allow us to maximise the dynamic range of the input stage and preserve the best sonic characteristics of the ECC83.
The second stage employs the classic circuitry used in the 610T and 250, with a differential pair of 6H30 valves biased with a DMOS current source. The 6H30 plates are driven by the output stage.
To drive the output tubes, we use new silicon carbide (SiC) JFETs. These devices allow us to automatically bias each output tube to an ideal quiescent current and maximise driver headroom, providing better low end control.
The output drivers are also output driven, providing even more headroom during large signal swings.
The output tubes are of the new KT170 type, which have greater plate voltage headroom, maximum cathode current and plate dissipation. They offer great musicality and, in a properly designed circuit, the KT170 provides exceptional performance.
The power supply has solid-state regulation for the front end and tube regulation (6H30 and 6550) for the output tube screens and driver stage. It also includes a Pi filter with a large choke, reducing output stage supply ripple.
The 330M is a fully balanced amplifier, from input to output. It operates exclusively in Pentode mode due to its higher efficiency. Screen and plate voltages are selected for best linearity.
The rear panel includes balanced XLR and single-ended RCA inputs, 8 Ω and 4 Ω output taps, 12 V triggers, RS-232 control, tube hourmeter, 20 A IEC and fan speed adjustment.
