PS1 MKII MM & MM+MC. High-End Tube Phono Preamplifier

The Evolution of a Classic

Since its launch in 2005, the PS1 has become one of our best-selling products, earning widespread acclaim from Hi-Fi specialists worldwide.

Now, with an enhanced power supply, new finishes, and the option to integrate our MC step-up transformers, this updated version preserves the essence of its predecessor while delivering an even more refined sound quality.

Why Tubes Outperform Transistors for Vinyl Playback

Greater overload tolerance, preventing distortion on heavily modulated or worn records, thus reducing perceived noise.

Warm and natural sound, ideal for analog LP reproduction.

Superior handling of the RIAA curve, which spans a 40 dB difference between 20 Hz and 20 kHz—a challenge that tubes manage more smoothly than transistors.

Passive feedback-free design, avoiding unwanted distortions.

High-fidelity components and hand-wired construction, eliminating circuit boards that might degrade signal purity.

Our priority is to ensure every microvolt of cartridge signal reaches the tubes unimpeded, avoiding unnecessary switches or coupling capacitors that could alter sound quality.

The Story Behind the PS1 – By David Shaw (Founder of Icon Audio)

"I designed the PS1 to extract the maximum musical detail without amplifying the imperfections of worn records. Tubes handle overload and distortion better than transistors, as they recover more quickly and produce less distortion. This allows them to manage the transient peaks of imperfect LPs more effectively, delivering a more pleasant and natural sound."

Recognizing the quality of Moving Coil (MC) cartridges, we manufacture our own 10x step-up transformers, ensuring optimal gain without compromising fidelity. Additionally, the PS1’s output is higher than average, enabling direct connection to a power amplifier without the need for an additional preamp, thanks to its integrated volume control.

With thousands of units sold, we maintain an exceptional track record—as of June 2019, no PS1 unit has ever been returned due to dissatisfaction.

The PS1 has become a reference standard in the prestigious Hi-Fi World magazine.

MM vs. MC Cartridges – Which One to Choose?

Moving Magnet (MM): More affordable, high-output, and suitable for most systems.

Moving Coil (MC): Generally more expensive but offers superior sound quality.

Many Hi-Fi enthusiasts prefer MC cartridges, as the original LP master is cut using a moving coil stylus. However, MC cartridges require step-up transformers to achieve proper gain.

At Icon Audio, we design and manufacture our own MC transformers, which can be installed at purchase or added later. Their sound is detailed, smooth, and free from artificial harshness.

A front panel switch allows for quick selection between MM and MC inputs, ensuring convenient switching.
