BRINKMANN Protractor. Precision Cartridge Alignment Tool with Optimized IEC Geometry
The Brinkmann Protractor is a precision-engineered alignment tool designed to achieve optimal setup of phono cartridges and tonearms. Built around the IEC geometry standard, it enables highly accurate cartridge alignment with a clear, methodical approach—eliminating the need for guesswork or complex interpolation.
Optimized IEC-Based Geometry
This protractor is based on the internationally recognized IEC null points of 66 mm and 121 mm, which have proven to offer excellent results for tracing accuracy and minimized tracking distortion across the record surface. While alternative geometries exist, the IEC standard ensures optimal alignment for most tonearm and cartridge combinations.
No Interpolation Needed: Millimetric Accuracy
Unlike printed templates or visual guides, the Brinkmann Protractor features a calculated offset between the guide axis and spindle hole, precisely equal to half the distance between the two null points. This layout ensures that aligning the cartridge at the inner null point automatically achieves correct alignment at the outer null point, streamlining the process and eliminating unnecessary adjustments.
The precision of this system allows users to detect misalignments down to thousandths of a millimeter—critical for achieving optimal stylus contact and groove tracking.
Tonearm Adjustment and Effective Length
If your headshell slots don’t allow for proper alignment, adjusting the tonearm’s pivot position relative to the platter spindle may be necessary. This is easily achievable with eccentrically drilled tonearm bases or sliding-mount tonearms, allowing changes to the effective length as needed. While this may slightly differ from the manufacturer's specifications, perfect alignment with the protractor ensures ideal performance.
Thanks to its intelligent design, the Brinkmann Protractor maintains perfect reference geometry even when the pivot point is repositioned, ensuring accurate cartridge and tonearm setup—even if the cartridge isn’t perfectly parallel to the headshell body. What matters most is its alignment with the etched grid.
High-Precision CNC Machining
The protractor is CNC-machined to a tolerance of ±0.01 mm, ensuring absolute precision in all critical elements: guide bar channel, spindle hole, and etched alignment grid. Manufactured in a single machine setup, without repositioning between machining steps, this process ensures unmatched accuracy and consistency.
