AUDIOQUEST WEL Signature Digital Audio AES-EBU

The AES / EBU, jointly developed by the Audio Engineering Society and the European Broadcasting Union, established a two-channel digital standard for interconnecting digital devices in the professional world. But, AES / EBU also has its application in the home environment. While AES / EBU can be single channel, balanced or optical, here we are referring to balanced digital interconnection.

Solid 100% Silver Perfect Surface (PSS) conductors:

The interaction of the wires is the biggest cause of distortion in a cable. Concentrated semisolid conductors avoid many strand interaction distortion mechanisms. Solid core conductors offer a complete and compelling solution to this problem.

The quality of the conductor metal is critical to the best performance of the cable. The conductor surface is the only area of the conductor with 100% current density at all frequencies. The smoothness of the conductor surface is imperative because the surface is a guide rail for the entire energy envelope. The best conductive metals copper and silver have lower grain limits and low oxygen content for low distortion and high performance.

Perfect surface technology applied to ultra-pure silver provides unprecedented clarity and dynamic contrast. Solid conductors prevent filament interaction, a major source of distortion in cables. Perfect-Surface Extreme Purity Silver minimizes distortion caused by grain boundaries that exist within any metallic conductor, almost completely eliminating hardness and greatly increasing clarity compared to OFHC, OCC, 8N, and other coppers.

Hard Cell Foam Insulation:

Insulation is necessary to keep positive and negative conductors separate and to provide stability to the cable geometry. Insulation is also a "dielectric" because it is within the magnetic field of the conductor. Dielectrics absorb energy, which after a delay is released into the signal, causing smearing and distortion. Better insulation reduces distortion by absorbing less energy.

Hard foam insulation is used exclusively in most AudioQuest digital audio and video cables. Similar to foamy PE, it is nitrogen injected to create pockets of air. The "hard" foam is used because the stiffness of the material allows the cable conductors to maintain the same relationship to each other throughout the entire length of the cable, thus ensuring that the characteristic impedance of the cable is consistent.

All WEL Signature conductors use air tube insulation because air absorbs almost no energy, and FEP is the best solid extrudable insulation and absorbs less energy than other materials. The FEP air tubes used in the WEL Signature have almost nothing but air around the solid PSS conductors (117% more air than the AudioQuest Wind interconnect.

100% shield coverage (Foil + Silver Spiral):

Shielding always plays an important role in any cable design, but shielding in the coaxial interconnect plays an especially important role because it functions not only as a shield but also as a path. return. For this reason, AudioQuest pays special attention to the quality of the shielding metal and the manufacturing techniques, both of which affect the sound and the picture.

72V Dielectric Bias System (DBS, US Pat #s 7,126,055 & 7,872,195 B1):

All insulation slows down the signal on the inner conductor. When isolation is unbiased, it slows down parts of the signal differently - a big problem for highly time-sensitive multi-octave audio. AudioQuest DBS creates a strong and stable electrostatic field that saturates and polarizes (organizes) the molecules in the insulation. This minimizes both the energy storage in the insulation and the multiple non-linear time delays that occur. Sound appears from a strikingly black background with unexpected detail and dynamic contrast. ECP battery packs will last for years. A test button and LED allow for occasional battery testing.

WEL Signature uses the 72V carbon DBS. This takes things a step further by using a proprietary technology that was originally developed for use in the AudioQuest Niagara 7000, which includes a superior RFI filter, used to drain out harmful radio frequency interference.

(The batteries in an ECP battery pack will last for years because there is no current draw. The batteries will eventually die from internal leakage, just like any battery, even if they are never unpacked).

Carbon-based 7-layer Noise Dissipation System (NDS), 3 x EMI Absorption:

100% shield coverage is easy. Preventing captured RF interference from modulating the equipment ground reference requires the AQ Noise Dissipation System. The Noise Dissipation System prevents a significant amount of RFI from reaching the equipment ground plane.

AudioQuest's Noise Dissipation System (NDS) offers a compelling solution to this challenge using metal only or alternating layers of metal and carbon-charged synthetics to effectively "shield the shield" by absorbing and reflecting Radio Frequency energy ( RF) before it reaches the layer adhered to the ground.

The WEL firm uses the 7-layer carbon-based Noise Dissipation System (NDS) to prevent most RFI from reaching the ground plane of the equipment.

Triple Balance Geometry:

Geometry is the physical relationship of conductors to each other within a cable and determines the most basic electrical values of a cable (capacitance and inductance). Different cable applications have different / specialized geometric requirements, so these applications do not simply follow a "one size fits all" approach. Better geometry leads to lower levels of distortion.

Wild Blue Yonder cables' three conductors "triple balanced" ensure that, whether prepared with RCA or XLR connectors, positive and negative signals have equally low distortion conductive paths. The 100% coverage shield is never used as the bottom conductor.

Directionality:

AudioQuest's understanding of conductor directionality and its effect on audio performance has constantly evolved, becoming louder and more comprehensive. All audio cables are directional. The correct direction is determined by the arrows on the plugs or on the cable parts.

Cold-hung silver directly on machined extreme-purity red copper:

AudioQuest specifies the materials and designs each of its own connectors from the ground up, resulting in the long-lasting quality and exceptional performance you deserve. These components are crucial to the overall performance of a cable.

To provide the best possible performance for each application, AudioQuest designs each of its connectors from the ground up. These components are crucial to the overall performance of the cable. Meticulous care is taken to evaluate the highest quality materials and design for each application.

AudioQuest pays particular attention to the coating it uses on the base metals of its carefully crafted connectors. This novel patented plug design allows for a solderless connection, which is a common source of distortion. Because ground bushings are stamped rather than machined, the metal can be chosen for low distortion rather than machine capacity. Red-Copper offers a cleaner and clearer sound than nickel-plated or OFHC metals commonly found in plugs from competing manufacturers.

This plug design allows a perfect heat-free connection between the cord and the plug. The connection between the plug and the conductors is made using AQ's cold welding system, which provides a superior connection that ensures that the structural integrity of the conductor is kept completely intact. The Cold Welding System refers to a combination of high pressure at the point of contact and the use of paste impregnated with copper or silver. (WEL signature silver conductors are given silver paste.) XLR plugs are also available.
