Aries Headphone Amplifier and Preamp
All our discrete operational amplifiers and voltage regulators have come together to form our first piece of true audio equipment: the Aries Headphone Amplifier and Preamp. It uses our Pro discrete operational amplifiers for the main audio path, our DIP8 discrete operational amplifiers to manage line-level inputs and outputs, and our discrete voltage regulators in the power supply.
All of this, along with a precision stepped attenuator volume control and an interactive touchscreen, results in possibly the best headphone amplifier and preamplifier mankind has ever known.
Inputs and Outputs
- Base Model: 2 RCA inputs and a front 1/8" input.
- Complete Model: Optionally, an XLR input set and a pair of RCA and XLR line-level outputs can be obtained, allowing the unit to function as a preamplifier.
- Headphone Output: Standard 1/4" jack on the front panel. All connectors are gold-plated.
Controls
Input selection and gain settings are managed via a touchscreen. Volume and balance controls are interchangeable and are used to control a 64-step switched relay attenuator.
Interior
- Main Audio Path: Located on the right side of the unit, it consists of two pairs of our SS2590 discrete operational amplifiers forming the input and output stages, with the relay-switched stepped attenuator in between.
- XLR Inputs and Preamplifier Outputs: Managed by our SS3601 and SS3602 discrete operational amplifiers.
- No Capacitors in the Signal Path: Possible DC mismatches are handled with a DC servo.
- Power Supply: Regulated by a pair of our discrete voltage regulators, with a Mu Metal shielded toroidal power transformer for extremely low magnetic field pickup and no hum.
- Universal AC Power Input: Works with 115V or 230V.
- High-Quality Switching Relays: Both sides of the signal and ground of all inputs are switched with high-quality relays to avoid ground loops.
- Microprocessor Controller: Controls the attenuator and touchscreen, entering sleep mode when the unit is playing music to reduce noise.
Stepped Attenuator
- Reed Relay Implementation: Eliminates much of the annoying "click and clack" of relays when switching, instead having a quieter "ting and tick."
- 64-Step Attenuator: 1dB per step, mutes when volume is fully lowered.
- Precision Resistors: All resistors in the attenuator (and in the audio path as a whole) are thin-film resistors with a 0.1% tolerance.
- Constant 180 Ohms Output Impedance: For extremely low Johnson noise, constant at all volume settings.
- Improved Volume Level Matching: Stepped attenuators offer better volume level matching from right to left, critical when listening to headphones.
