To optimize sound quality, all non-essential functions, such as standby and headphone output, have been removed, as they do not impact audio performance.
Efficiency and Cost Savings
The 6L6/KT66 tube set provides a more cost-effective alternative compared to KT88/EL34 models, with minimal power difference (30+30 W in ultralinear mode). Additionally, their lower energy requirements reduce the use of copper and iron in transformers, as well as overall power consumption.
In summary, the ST40 6L6 offers the same performance and quality as the ST40 MKIV, using exactly the same circuit and chassis, but with significantly reduced manufacturing costs.
At the time of writing, a full tube replacement for the ST40 6L6 costs approximately £120.
As with our other amplifiers, various upgrade options are available for tubes and capacitors, including Genalex KT66 and Tung Sol 6L6.
Circuit Design
This model follows the same design approach as the ST40, ST60, and ST300. The Cascode circuit, developed by David Shaw, utilizes the 6SN7 tube, widely regarded as one of the best choices for high-quality sound. Thanks to this design, only two types of tubes are required, simplifying maintenance and customization.
High-Performance Output Transformers
The ST40 6L6’s outstanding performance is largely due to its hand-crafted output transformers, which have played a key role in winning multiple awards.
These transformers stay true to the original formula and feature a low-distortion tertiary winding, a rare feature in modern amplifiers. Designed and manufactured in-house, the tertiary winding reduces distortion and minimizes global feedback without compromising sound quality.
Choke-Regulated Power Supply
In combination with smoothing capacitors, the high-capacity choke ensures precise power regulation and a silent, interference-free sonic background.
Low-Feedback Design
Excessive feedback can degrade an amplifier's sound quality. In the Stereo 40 6L6, only a moderate amount is applied to preserve a natural and dynamic sound.
GEC KT66 and US 6L6 Tubes
The GEC KT66 and US 6L6 tubes are more affordable versions of the KT88 and are still regarded as some of the best Beam Pentode tubes available. They are efficient, easy to handle, and produce low distortion, enabling the ST40 6L6 to deliver exceptional dynamics and detailed micro-analysis of sound.
Power and Performance
This amplifier delivers 30+30 watts per channel, more than enough to fill a medium-to-large room with rich sound using average-efficiency speakers. With the rise of brands like Klipsch, which offer "Heritage" models with 100 dB efficiency, it is possible to achieve very high volume levels and deep bass without requiring excessive power.
Ultralinear or Triode Mode
Upon request and at no additional cost, the ST40 6L6 can be configured to operate in pure triode mode.
Optional Remote Control
A remote control for volume adjustment with a mute function is available as an optional extra.
