Lyra Atlas, MC Cartridge
ATLAS...is the world's first asymmetric moving coil phono cartridge. The Atlas is the new flagship capsule from Lyra. Why asymmetric? By literally losing the "barriers" to great sound that are present in all other pickups today, a number of significant performance improvements are made.
First, the differently shaped structures on the left and right sides of the capsule body suppress the formation of standing waves within it, resulting in a significant reduction in resonance-induced colorations. Second, the asymmetrical construction offsets the front magnet mount and its associated mounting system so that it is no longer in line with the cantilever assembly. This opens up a direct, solid path between the cantilever assembly and the tonearm head so that vibrations from the cantilever can be quickly drained away once they have been converted into electrical signals, again suppressing induced resonances.
Lyra remains the only cartridge manufacturer to mount the cantilever assembly directly to the cartridge body, thus achieving a seamless, fully rigid connection between the cantilever assembly and the headstock. The effectiveness of this system has been enhanced as a result of the asymmetric structure of the Atlas. Control of spurious resonances is aided by the use of a tapered mounting area, which attaches the Atlas more firmly to the headstock and makes it easier to transfer vibrational energy to the tonearm.
While the Atlas cartridge retains the Titan's rockerless dual-magnet system, diamond-coated boron cantilever shaft and variable-radius linear-contact stylus, the mounting structure of the dual-blade cantilever assembly has been increased in rigidity and the completely new signal coil system. Instead of a square, the coil is shaped like an X, allowing each channel to work more independently of the other. This provides better tracking, tighter channel matching, improved separation, and less distortion due to crosstalk.
At the same time, we have been able to increase the performance and efficiency of the generator coils. The Atlas has a 12% higher output voltage than the Titan, but it achieves this while reducing the amount of wire in the coils by 22%. This reduction in mass further improves tracking performance, while better electrical and output characteristics allow the phono stages to work more efficiently.
The Atlas uses Lyra's "New Angle" technology, which mechanically biases the signal coils so that they are perfectly aligned with the front and rear magnets when vinyl LP playback takes place. This evens out discrepancies in vertical and horizontal compliance, and allows the Atlas coils to move with equal ease in all directions for optimum performance.
As with the Titan and Olympos, the handcrafted Atlas uses a body that is meticulously carved from one piece of solid titanium, through a process that involves both contact (for the exterior) and non-contact machining (for the exterior). internal body structures). By making most of the Atlas body surfaces non-parallel (avoiding dimensions that are multiples of other dimensions) and by adding a prestressed phase interference resonance control system, resonances have been further inhibited.
We firmly believe that the Atlas cartridge represents a significant step forward in vinyl LP playback.
