Connect It Phono DS Mini XLR > Mini XLR: Balanced Connection for Pure Sound
The Connect It Phono DS Mini XLR > Mini XLR cable connects Pro-Ject True Balanced turntables with True Balanced phono preamps via mini XLR connectors. A balanced signal originating from a moving coil (MC) phono cartridge remains balanced through the tonearm to the junction box with a balanced mini XLR output. This provides the option to send this balanced signal directly to a phono stage with a mini XLR input. The Connect It Phono DS Mini XLR > Mini XLR cable features flexible oxygen-free copper conductors with silver-plated copper connectors and a low capacitance of 90 pF, ideal for phono signals. Its standard length is 1.23 meters (4.04 feet).
For example, after upgrading from an original moving magnet (MM) cartridge to an MC cartridge, the Connect It Phono DS Mini XLR > Mini XLR carries the balanced signal from turntables like the X1 B and X2 B to phono preamps such as the Phono Box S3 B and Phono Box DS3 B, achieving a balanced connection with a single cable run. Any combination of turntable and preamp with mini XLR connectors can be paired for balanced operation.

Balanced phono signal transmission is now more accessible than ever. Phono signals, in fact, are similar to microphone signals in terms of level: they are extremely low and require significant amplification, making them vulnerable to interference. Just as balanced XLR connections are used in the recording industry to protect microphone signals, it is also advisable to use balanced connections for phono signals, which are equally sensitive.
In the early days of recorded music, balanced connections were essential to avoid noise. However, as home listening became popular, unbalanced (RCA) connections became the standard to reduce costs. What Do I Need for a Balanced Signal?
To benefit from this technology, you need an MC cartridge, a balanced turntable output, a balanced cable, and a phono stage with a balanced input. MC cartridges are naturally balanced, while MM cartridges are internally grounded and should be used with RCA connections for optimal performance. Most turntables come with Sumiko MM cartridges and RCA cables, allowing high-fidelity listening right out of the box. Upgrading to a balanced experience is possible whenever the user is ready.
Basics of Balanced Transmission
Balanced transmission is crucial at the input stage. Although a balanced signal also picks up noise, how it is treated in the balanced circuit makes all the difference. This signal consists of positive (+) and negative (-) conductors, as well as a ground conductor. Interference affects both conductors equally, and the balanced circuit uses “common-mode rejection,” which cancels out noise and amplifies only the desired signal. This enables interference-free signal amplification, resulting in a more detailed and dynamic listening experience.
