Connect it Phono S Mini XLR: Balanced Connection for Pure, Detailed Sound

The Connect it Phono S Mini XLR cable enables the connection of Pro-Ject True Balanced turntables to True Balanced phono preamplifiers via mini XLR connections. A balanced signal from a moving coil (MC) cartridge maintains its balance through the turntable’s tonearm to the mini XLR output. This allows for direct transmission of the signal to a balanced phono stage with a mini XLR input. The Connect it Phono S Mini XLR features flexible oxygen-free copper conductors and gold-plated phosphor bronze connectors, with a low capacitance of 100 pF, ideal for phono signal transmission. Its standard length is 1.23 meters (4.04 feet).

Upgrading from a standard moving magnet (MM) cartridge to an MC cartridge, the Connect it Phono S Mini XLR carries the balanced signal from turntables like the X1 B and X2 B to compatible phono preamplifiers, such as the Phono Box S3 B and Phono Box DS3 B, offering flexible compatibility between any turntable and preamplifier with mini XLR.

The Importance of Balanced Transmission

Balanced phono signal transmission is now more accessible than ever. The phono signal is, in fact, similar to a microphone signal in terms of level: it is extremely low and requires high amplification, making it vulnerable to interference. Just as balanced XLR connections are used in the recording industry to protect microphone signals, balanced connections are also advisable for phono signals, which are equally sensitive.

In the early days of recorded music, balanced connections were essential to avoid noise. However, as home listening became popular, unbalanced (RCA) connections became the standard to cut costs. What Do I Need for a Balanced Signal?

To take advantage of this technology, you need an MC cartridge, a balanced turntable output, a balanced cable, and a phono stage with a balanced input. MC cartridges are naturally balanced, while MM cartridges are internally grounded and should be used with RCA connections for optimal performance. Most turntables come with Sumiko MM cartridges and RCA cables, allowing high-fidelity listening right out of the box. Upgrading to a balanced experience is possible whenever the user is ready.

Balanced Transmission Basics

Balanced transmission is essential at the input stage. Although a balanced signal also picks up noise, how it’s treated in the balanced circuit is what makes the difference. This signal consists of positive (+) and negative (-) conductors, as well as a ground conductor. Interference affects both conductors equally, and the balanced circuit employs “common-mode rejection,” which cancels out noise and amplifies only the desired signal. This enables the signal to be amplified without interference, resulting in a more detailed and dynamic listening experience.

The result is clear to the listener: greater soundstage depth and incredible dynamics. Favorite records come to life, and this technology brings out every detail that may have previously gone unnoticed.
