A cartridge is an electromechanical device that translates the information from the grooves of records into an electrical signal that can be amplified to produce music.
A moving magnet (MM) cartridge is a magnetic capsule in which the stylus moves a magnet through its holder, while the coil is fixed in position.
The tip of the diamond stylus is the only part of the cartridge that comes into direct contact with the disc. As the stylus traces the groove movements, it vibrates the cantilever. The cantilever is a rigid tube with a stylus mounted at one end and a magnet at the other. The rubber suspension allows it to rotate so that the cantilever can accurately follow the grooves. The vibrations of the needle tip travel along this "arm" to the magnet. When the magnet vibrates, its magnetic field varies. These variations of the magnetic field generate a small voltage in the coils, which corresponds to the movement of the magnet. This signal passes through a phono preamplifier (for RIAA equalisation) before reaching the amplifier/speakers, which convert the electrical signal into sound.
To obtain a stereo signal (left and right channels), this configuration is essentially duplicated; by two magnets attached to the cantilever at a 90-degree angle, each with a corresponding set of coils.
In a moving magnet cartridge, the needle moves along the groove of a disc, transferring its mechanical force from the cantilever to a magnet connected to the other end.
The cantilever and the magnet move (moving magnet), interacting with a coil to generate an electromagnetic signal. The signal is output through four pins located on the back of the capsule.
Selecting the right cartridge for your turntable is essential to ensure high-quality playback and extend the life of your vinyl. Here are some key factors to consider when choosing a cartridge:
Compatibility: It is important to check the compatibility of the cartridge with your turntable. Check the manufacturer's technical specifications to ensure that the cartridge is suitable for your turntable model.
Budget: Consider your budget and establish a price range before you begin your search. Keep in mind that investing in a higher quality cartridge often results in better long-term sonic performance.
Sound style: Choose a cartridge that suits your listening preferences. Some cartridges offer a warmer, smoother sound, while others are brighter and more detailed. Research the sound characteristics of each cartridge to find the one that best suits your personal taste.
Superior quality: All our cartridges are manufactured to the highest quality standards to ensure exceptional performance and accurate reproduction of your vinyl.
Wide selection: We have a wide variety of MM turntable cartridges so you can find the perfect choice for your listening needs and preferences.
Expert advice: Our team of experts is available to advise you and answer all your questions, helping you make the best buying decision.
Yes, moving magnet (MM) cartridges are compatible with most turntables that have a standard pick-up arm. Be sure to check the specifications of your turntable before purchasing.
The life of an MM turntable cartridge depends on proper use and care. In general, with good maintenance and regular needle replacement, a quality capsule can last for several years.
The main difference lies in the design and technology used. Moving Magnet (MM) capsules use a magnet to generate the magnetic field that interacts with the coil, while Moving Coil (MC) capsules use a coil suspended in a fixed magnetic field. In general, MC capsules tend to offer higher fidelity and detail, but they also tend to be more expensive.
