Hypex Softstart Module. Inrush Current Limiter for Transformers
The Hypex Softstart Module is designed to limit the inrush current that occurs when powering up toroidal transformers, while providing easy control via push-button or switch. This module ensures a smooth startup of the power supply, protecting sensitive components and preventing unnecessary fuse tripping.

Optional PTC thermal protection
The Hypex Softstart Module uses a triac to initially connect high-power resistors in series with the AC mains, limiting the inrush current to the transformer. Once the startup sequence is completed, a relay bypasses the resistors and connects the transformer directly to the mains.
An optional bi-color LED can be connected to clearly indicate "On" or "Standby" status. The standby mode ensures very low power consumption, making it ideal for energy-efficient designs.
The module can operate using either a momentary push-button or a latching switch, depending on internal jumper configuration. It also supports integration of a PTC thermal sensor as an additional layer of protection.
Compatibility
Optimized for toroidal transformers
Although it has been used with switch-mode power supplies (SMPS), Hypex does not certify or support this application officially.
The datasheet includes a connection diagram for use with SMPS400, but user discretion is advised.
