Icon Audio ST40 MKIV: Evolution and Sonic Excellence
The Icon Audio ST40 MKI, launched in 2001, marked a milestone in the history of the Leicester-based company. Since then, it has been continuously refined, and in its latest iteration, the MKIV, it incorporates significant enhancements, solidifying its position as an exceptional-value integrated amplifier.
New Features and Improvements
Headphone Output for Greater Versatility
Responding to customer requests, the ST40 MKIV now includes a headphone jack, allowing for greater flexibility without compromising sound quality.
Optimized Power Supply
Thanks to a combination of an improved power supply and redesigned output transformers, ultralinear mode now delivers over 50W of power. This results in greater capacity to handle complex transients and deeper, more defined bass response.
Increased Power in Triode Mode
Since many users prefer triode mode, we have increased its power to 30W, making it suitable for almost any speaker, except for those with very low efficiency.
New Driver Circuit Design
The driver circuit has been redesigned with a cascode configuration in the first stage, allowing the use of the renowned 6SN7 tube for all driver functions. This enhances sound definition, refines frequency response at low volumes, and simplifies tube replacement, as only two tube types are used throughout the amplifier.

Choke-Regulated Power Supply
Along with smoothing capacitors, the large power choke provides ultra-stable power regulation, reducing background noise and ensuring a clean, pure sound.
High-Performance Output Transformers
The tertiary-wound transformers, with an additional winding, reduce harmonic distortion and minimize the need for global feedback. Handmade and highly precise, these transformers are considered among the best on the market. Although their production is costly, the results more than justify the investment.
Low Feedback Design
To preserve the natural warmth of the sound, the ST40 MKIV employs minimal feedback, avoiding the adverse effects of excessive correction.
Compatible with a Wide Range of Tubes
This model is designed to work with various output tubes, allowing for full customization. It is compatible with EL34, KT88, KT66, KT77, KT90, 6CA7, and 6550, enabling users to experiment and find their ideal sound.
Ultralinear or Triode Mode at the Flip of a Switch
For over sixty years, audiophiles have debated which mode delivers the best sound—ultralinear or triode. With the ST40 MKIV, there's no need to choose! You can switch between both modes with a simple switch, enjoying the best of both worlds without additional modifications.
6SN7 (CV181) Tubes
Larger and more relaxed than their miniature equivalents, 6SN7/CV181 tubes provide exceptional musical reproduction and a long lifespan. Choose between the David Shaw new-production versions or vintage USA and Russian models for a tailored sound experience.
Remote Control for Precise Volume Adjustment
The included remote control allows for fine volume adjustments from the comfort of your listening position, providing a more convenient and precise experience.
