GRADE: Headphones made in Brooklyn
Founded in 1953 by watchmaker and engineer Joseph Grado in Brooklyn, Grado Labs began by producing phono cartridges, later evolving in the 1990s into the manufacturing of handcrafted Hi-Fi headphones. Today, it remains a family-owned business operating from its historic Brooklyn factory, staying true to music and to excellence in the design and assembly of its products.
Grado’s catalogue is organized into four series, all featuring highly regarded dynamic drivers:
Prestige (SR60x, SR80x, SR125x…): Entry-level option with detailed sound and great value.
Reference (RS1e, SR1x…): Use of fine woods such as mahogany, with enhanced resolution.
Professional (PS500e): Hybrid construction and large drivers for a fuller sound.
Statement (GS1000e, GS3000x…): Flagship range, finished in exotic woods (cocobolo), XL drivers and maximum refinement.
Frequently Asked Questions about Grado:
Where are Grado headphones made?
All models are designed and hand-assembled in Brooklyn, New York, where the brand maintains strict quality control and individually tests each unit before it leaves the factory.
What’s the difference between the different series?
The Prestige Series is ideal for those starting out in Hi-Fi sound, with excellent value for money. The Reference Series incorporates fine woods and offers higher resolution. The Professional Series delivers a fuller sound and hybrid construction, while the Statement Series is the top range, featuring exotic woods, large drivers and the highest sonic refinement.
Are they comfortable for long listening sessions?
Their lightweight, on-ear design is suitable for extended use, although some models can feel a bit firm at first. Switching to alternative pads, such as “L-pads,” can improve comfort.
Do they need an amplifier to sound good?
Thanks to their high sensitivity, most Grado headphones work perfectly when connected to a portable DAC or quality audio output from a player. However, higher-end models such as those in the Statement Series can benefit from a dedicated amplifier to unleash their full potential.
Can they be modified or upgraded?
Yes. Some models allow for pad swaps, cable changes, or even upgraded drivers. Additionally, the Signature line already comes with a detachable cable and 52 mm transducers for greater detail and lower distortion.
Why do some users consider them “bright” in the treble?
Grado’s characteristic sound signature is very open, lively, and detailed, with present treble. Many audiophiles love this sonic profile, but sensitive listeners might find it a bit intense during long sessions.
